Case Study: Custom 15.6-Inch Capacitive Touchscreen for Elevator HMI with 2.5D Cover Glass
For an elevator HMI project, a customer needed more than a standard 15.6-inch LCD.
The touchscreen assembly required a custom front-panel design, featuring black 2.5D cover glass, uniform 16 mm borders, capacitive touch functionality, and a suitable FPC connection arrangement.
These details matter when integrating a touchscreen into equipment with specific mechanical and visual requirements.
Working from the customer's specifications, we developed a customized touchscreen assembly that progressed from sample development and approval to an initial commercial order and shipment.
Matching the Touchscreen to the Equipment Design
Selecting the right LCD size is only one part of developing a touchscreen for an embedded HMI system.
The cover glass must match the intended front-panel design, while the touch controller and FPC connections need to be considered alongside the available installation space.
Even when a standard LCD meets the display requirements, differences in glass dimensions, border layout, or connection positions can create additional integration challenges.
The project's LCD specifications and customization requirements were as follows:
The objective was to develop a touchscreen assembly that matched these requirements rather than relying on a standard display configuration.
A Custom LCD Touchscreen Assembly
Based on the project specifications, we developed a 15.6-inch touchscreen assembly combining the Full HD LCD module, capacitive touch panel, custom cover glass, and associated FPC connections.
Three design details were central to the project.
Custom 2.5D Cover Glass
The customer required a black cover glass with 2.5D edge finishing.
Unlike a conventional flat-cut edge, a 2.5D design creates a rounded transition around the glass perimeter while keeping the main surface flat.
This gives the front glass a smoother edge profile and a more refined appearance, particularly for HMI equipment where the glass forms a visible part of the control panel.
The physical sample features the specified black cover glass and rounded corners, allowing the edge design and overall appearance to be examined directly.
Uniform 16 mm Border Design
Another important requirement was a consistent 16 mm border on all four sides of the cover glass.
Border dimensions influence the visual balance of a touchscreen and its relationship with the surrounding equipment enclosure.
For equipment manufacturers, a clearly defined border layout also provides a reference when planning the front-panel opening and mounting structure.
We incorporated the specified uniform border design into the custom cover glass to meet the customer's front-panel design requirements.
LCD, Capacitive Touch, and FPC Integration
The project required the LCD and capacitive touch components to function as a coordinated display assembly.
The developed solution combines a 15.6-inch Full HD LCD with a capacitive touch panel and a dedicated touch FPC.
The LCD uses an eDP 1.2 display interface, while the touch panel has its own FPC with a touch controller IC, circuit traces, and connectors.
During equipment integration, engineers must consider both the LCD interface and touch-controller communication, along with connector accessibility and cable routing.
Coordinating these components within one assembly helped address the project's component-matching and integration requirements.
From Custom Sample to First Commercial Shipment
After approving the customized touchscreen sample, the customer placed their first order for the developed assembly.
The initial batch has since been shipped, marking the project's transition from custom development to commercial supply.
Our sample images highlight four aspects of the finished assembly:
- Front View: The overall appearance of the black cover glass and touchscreen assembly.
- Rear View: The LCD backing structure and connection arrangement.
- 2.5D Edge Detail: A close-up of the rounded glass corner and edge transition.
- Touch FPC Detail: The touch controller IC, circuit layout, and connectors.
Together, these images show the physical product behind the customization requirements.
Why Custom Display Integration Matters
A display that meets the required resolution, size, and brightness may still need customization to fit the equipment around it.
Cover glass dimensions, edge finishing, border layout, touch integration, and FPC positioning all play a role in the finished product.
By coordinating these elements within one touchscreen assembly, equipment manufacturers can simplify component matching and move more efficiently from design requirements toward commercial supply.
The same approach is relevant to other embedded HMI applications, including industrial control panels, building automation systems, and self-service terminals.
